Makes a neat gurgling sound like a dragon waking when you heat a full pot and a to add to the effect a squirt of steam comes out when the water is done. Switch lights up with an orange glow when you flip it down to turn on. Tested temp with a kitchen probe when flushing with clean water as the instructions recommend, each time it was 206 degrees F (which is almost perfect to brew coffee.) Construction is all (well mostly all)- stainless steel inside but there is a hole for the plastic viewing window. Must heat at least .5 liter (~2 mugs) of water min. Base is clad in plastic on exterior and cool to touch. It heats water very quickly to be used for tea, soups, hot chocolate etc. The interior is 100% stainless. I did not want to purchase a unit that the water had contact with plastic. I only use filtered water so I don't have to worry about scaling. A liter takes about five minutes to heat up. I have used it everyday for over a month.
