West Bend 6400 1-Quart Electric Tea Kettle, White Reviews

I recently purchased this tea kettle from Amazon.com.
It is wonderful! The outside of the kettle stays cool while the water inside boils. Heating the water to boiling only takes a few minutes which is nice when you have a hungry preschooler waiting for their Ramen noodles. I live in Wisconsin so I am partial to purchasing Westbend products as they are known for their reputation/durablity over the long haul.

What was appreciated about my previous electric teakettle was that the automatic shut-off shut off when the water reached the proper temperature. This tea kettle only shuts off when the water has totally evaporated.

I love my electric teakettle! I use it all the time. This kettle is great quality for the price, and it heats water FAST. It is also very well insulated and has not affected any surface I put it on. The whistle is very convenient, and it will automatically shut off if the water has boiled dry. Great item, especially for a dorm room! Recommended.

I really really wanted a glass kettle, with no plastic, and to be able to see the water level. Having the temperature selection to boot made this kettle an almost sure winner - on "paper"...
I was hoping they fixed the "smell/taste" issue from the old model. They didn't. Around the heating element, there is a silicon/rubber seal. I think it's the fault of the seal - there is a smell AND taste in the water.
What I did (after washing and boiling with vinegar as instructed) was boil some water in it, let it sit there to cool, and then taste it. YUCK!!
NOW - two important things to mention. First - my spouse is just barely able to detect it, and it doesn't bother him as all. He describes it as a "faint mineral aftertaste". To me it is SO strong, I can't see how anyone would call it faint.. Second - I *cannot* taste the difference if the water is NOT pure, i.e. in tea, oatmeal, or something else. This almost makes me want to keep the kettle,... Read more

Bought this kettle hoping for an all-glass product with no plastic, etc. I had considered the Breville Variable-Temperature Kettle but decided against it once I saw that there were plastic parts that came into contact with the boiling water. When the Capresso PerfecTea arrived, it had an awful plastic, benzene-like smell inside that seemed to be coming from a clear gasket that is in the very bottom of the kettle, protecting the heat element. The instructions had noted that this may exist as a result of "the manufacturing process" and recommended boiling water in it and discarding before use to get rid of the smell... I have boiled water in it, washed it with soap, washed it with baking soda, washed it with vinegar, and still that awful smell is there. I made one cup of tea and could smell and taste the same plastic qualities in the tea. I don't know how long it's supposed to take to get rid of the plastic smell/taste but I don't know if I'm willing to wait. I contacted Capresso... Read more

I bought this for my desk at work and thought it might inspire me to drink more tea with all of the health benefits that go along with that. I love it, I'm definitely drinking more tea, and I have no complaints whatsoever. I bought it in spite of the few previous reviewers who complained about a funky taste eminating from the container. I must say I never had that experience. My tea tastes just fine. I didn't really think that there would be much of a difference if I didn't use the handy slideout guide for brewing my tea (this is a chart to select the correct brewing temperature for different types of tea). However, there is a huge difference! I tried steeping Tazo full-leaf Zen (a green tea) after selecting "boil" as opposed to the recommended 160 degrees. After trying the tea at both temps the tea had a very noticeable and much better taste when I used the suggested temp. I really like that feature. It heats up super fast and I have been trying out all kinds of teas-... Read more

So far, I am very pleased with my SmartKettle. It heats fast, it is pretty accurate, and it doesn't leave a funny taste in the water. With the fully adjustable temperature it works great for any kind of tea. It pours easily without spillage, and the top opens wide for easy cleaning.
There are a few things that keep me from giving it a perfect score though:
- There is no physical power off switch. There is a button to start/stop heating, but no physical switch to turn off the unit. You have to unplug it if you don't want to keep the BRIGHT display on 24/7. Not a big deal, but a power switch on the unit wouldn't have cost much and would have made it a bit more convenient.
- There is no way to adjust the volume of the alarm beeps. It can be a bit loud when brewing a cup at 5am.
- The minimum water level for safe brewing is supposed to be 16oz, I've found that you need to fill it closer to 32oz or the unit gives a low water level error and won't... Read more

I've been using electric kettles for most of my life. And most of them did the job just fine, though many only survived 2 years (like irons and toasters, they seem to have a limited life). I had 2 cordless Braun stainless kettles before this one, both worked really well but both ended up leaking - likely the reason they were eventually taken off the market. So when I set out on my quest for another full-auto stainless steel kettle, the chefs choice sounded like the one to beat, and a good match for the rest of the kitchen.
The Smarts... The SmartKettle 688 LOOKS great, with the red LCD temperature display on the side and all. It's a wonderful feature to actually SELECT a boil point and SEE the temperature as it progresses - if you care. If you inadvertently boil it empty, it will beep, stop and alert you (H2O) that you need to fill her up. It beeps when it's done, so you can hear it from the next room whilst you're multi-tasking. The 10-page... Read more

Have used this a fair amount at this time. A great kettle! It works just fine and I really like the ability to set the temperature. Contrary to the instructions, the English (don't know about the Japanese or Chinese), insist you NEVER boil water for tea, of any kind. It ruins the flavor, by de-oxygenating the water. I have visited with several Englishmen in recent years, about their tea drinking. You bring the water just short of boiling. This kettle is perfect for that!
The only con is relatively minor. It is quite touchy how much water is initially put in. I recommend a good 4 cups. If you don't put enough in, when it goes into the heating cycle, it will tell you there is not enough water. You add more and it goes into warming mode, and takes FOREVER to reach temperature. I just turn it off and start over, usually, if I do this. Two or three cups of water is not enough, even if you only want one cup of tea.
