5.0 out of 5 stars The max capacity is 1.75 litres, NOT 1 3/4 cup as stated, January 12, 2009

This electric tea kettle boils 1.75 litre of tap water in exactly 8 minutes, then automatically shuts itself off. It is saving us time and cooking fuel, and saves itself from boiling dry and self-destructing. I highly recommend it for those who need a couple pots of boiling water every day. So far(in a month or two), neither the heating plate in the bottom nor the glass pot itself have crusted up with mineral deposits and the water tastes pure and clean.

I bought this kettle to replace a Capresso one, which I liked but it did not last long -- the handle broke off at the top just when garantee expired. I also hoped that this kettle will solve the problem of bad chemical smell apparently coming from the silicon or plastic seal between glass and metal heating element. Alas, this kettle has the same problem as Capresso! I hope smell will disappear as it did eventually in Capresso. Also, I was a bit disappointed that it took 7-8 min. to boil max. water -- longer than Capresso, I thought, but maybe I am forgetting. Another annoying feature -- the package said "fast and quiet," but it was neither. It was quite noisy, much noisier than Capresso. And don't even think to fill this kettle with more water than max -- even that was too much: the boiling water was splashing so violantly, I was afraid it would spill over, but luckily it did not. But the next time I'll use less water than max. With all this said, the kettle did its job, turned off... Read more

I bought this to replace my Capresso 259.03 H2O Plus Glass Water Kettle, Polished Chrome. I decided to try something new because this one had an idea on how to prevent mineral build up.

Well, while that turned out great, it had 2 problems:

1) IT SMELLS! The water has to pass through a plastic spout and it leaves the poured water with a horrible plastic smell

2) Too complicated for their own good. The lid has a button you push to open it. The capresso you have to (OH NO!!) lift it yourself. The difference: The mechanism for openning the lid on this one broke. I never had a problem with the capresso. And the replacement (I tried another one incase the problems I was having were just a fluke) had a small little filter screen for the water pop out and I couldn't get it back in (I could see this as useful for... 4.0 out of 5 stars Manufacturer claims plastic is BPA free, December 11, 2011
This review is from: Hamilton 1.7 Liter Stainless Steel Kettle (Kitchen)
My only concern after purchasing this kettle was that the level gauge has a plastic surface in contact with the boiling water on the inside of the kettle.

After sending an inquiry to the manufacturer about the type of plastic used in the construction, I received the following response:

"Thank you for contacting us. The plastic used is polypropylene which is BPA free. If you are in need of additional assistance please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for your patronage.

Sincerely,

5.0 out of 5 stars Great kettle! Hot water fast! Not plastic!, September 28, 2011

This review is from: Hamilton 1.7 Liter Stainless Steel Kettle (Kitchen)
I absolutely love this kettle. I got my first one about six years ago and it's still going strong. In fact, I just bought my second one so I could have hot water in my office at school for tea and ramen.

*The water gets hot fast. You know, in case you're starving but only have about five minutes before undergrads start trickling into your office to ask for extra points on their midterms for spelling their names correctly.

*It automatically shuts off when it's done boiling. A nice feature to have when you dart out of the office to intercept the cookie tray before the colloquium attendees get to it.

*There's a window-thingy on the side to let you know how much water is inside. Great for figuring out how many packets of ramen you can make.

*The carafe can be completely removed from the electric base; no cord attached. I wish I could make a grad student joke about this feature, but nothing comes to mind except noose jokes ('cause, you know,... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Kettle - Read Instructions!, November 14, 2011
This review is from: Hamilton 1.7 Liter Stainless Steel Kettle (Kitchen)
This kettle works perfectly for what it is supposed to be used for, boiling water at home. To those who gave it bad reviews because it was hot... really? That's what it is supposed to do... If you read the instructions before use, it says that the stainless steel surface gets hot and to only grab it by the handle as well as to have close supervision when any appliance is used by or near children. Would you grab a tea pot off the stove by anything other than the handle or allow your young children to operate it from the stove? No... It heats up quick and it was a great buy for only $20 at Costco. Super easy to use and has a removable mesh filter to prevent scale that is caused by lime and calcium in hard water.

2.0 out of 5 stars small, light, slow boiler, concerns about staying on, February 24, 2011

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program ( What's this?)
I currently have a T-Fal variable speed tea kettle and so did some direct comparisons between the two. The Bodum lagged in all. It took the T-Fal 2 min 19 sec to boil .5 liters and 3 min 35 seconds to boil a liter. The Bodum took 3 min 17 sec and 5 min 47 sec respectively, a significant difference and one that would certainly be noticeable while waiting. The greater size of the T-Fal is preferable to me as well--the Bodum tops out at the one liter mark, but others may not need a large kettle.

The Bodum is definitely lighter and if someone is concerned about weight, the Bodum wouldn't be a problem at all. It has a relatively small footprint, though not really significantly smaller than my T-Fal.

In general then, with the speed, size, and variabilty--I'd aim people to the T-Fal. But by far the biggest concern I had with the Bodum was its strange propensity to stay on even after boiling. On two occasions the kettle either stayed on or came back on and got hot... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Works just fine, December 6, 2010

There's nothing to it really, an electric water heater so I don't have to light up the stove, wonder if there's a small clean pot, stand there until it boils or forget and let it boil over, etc.
You fill this up, push the ON button, after it boils it turns off. You lift the pot off the base and pour over teabag or into steeping pot, whatever.
I like it because it's green and modern looking. Functionality is so basic there's nothing to complain about.
Like the previous reviewer, I noticed there was no specific OFF button (just the ON button) But the auto shut off worked fine. If you're worried about auto shutoff not working soon enough, unplug after the water has boiled. I don't want bells and whistles, literally, on my tea-pot. One switch is great and the size is perfect for a family of four at breakfast. It's not like we're trying to boil water for spaghetti!

Looks like someone beat me to a 5 star review, but I'm sure we are both very pleased we purchased... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Dangerous! AVOID!, February 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This kettle looked so cute and modern that I ignored the reviewers who claimed the fact that there is no "off" button is extremely dangerous. how bad could that really be, right? I bought the red color and thought it looked so perfect in my kitchen. HOWEVER, when my husband woke up to find the kettle STILL BOILING from the night before (though the water had long since evaporated)- he quickly plugged it out of the wall, and it is now on its way back to amazon. not only is this extremely dangerous, but it's also extremely costly! and explains the exorbitant electricity bill we recently received. who knows how many times the kettle stayed on boil for WAY over a minute.

I agree with the reviewer who said this item should be recalled- it's completely unsafe.
